PHILOSOPHY OF THE PREKINDER PROGRAM
A child’s first experiences at school are among the most important in life. PreKinder is a unique program designed to prepare Preschool aged children with the necessary skills for Kindergarten.
It is imperative that in an early childhood environment, the main objective should be to help, support and foster each child’s individual learning. The PreKinder program has therefore been developed so that it is responsive to each child’s needs, interests and developmental levels. The curriculum has been designed to develop children’s knowledge and skills in all developmental areas – physical, social, emotional, and intellectual – and to help children learn how to learn and to establish a foundation for lifelong learning.
The PreKinder curriculum encompasses not only Literacy, Numeracy, Creative Arts, Physical Education, Technology and Religion but it also encompasses everything that happens throughout everyday in
PreKinder. This includes all of the interactions, experiences and routines that are a part of each child’s day both spontaneous and planned. The children will be provided with opportunities to learn and express themselves through many varied experiences including language, drama, art, music, dance, play and physical activity.
The PreKinder program runs from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm Monday to Wednesday through school term. The doors are open from 8:30 am and the children are able to do quiet activities at this time.
TRANSITION PROGRAM IN PREKINDER
PreKinder is designed to help make the transition to school as smooth as possible. When children know what to expect they are much more likely to feel confident and happy about starting school. The children will be involved in many experiences throughout their PreKinder year, which will assist in the process of helping them become familiar with the school setting and routines. Sometimes PreKinder children will be observers in school activities, other times participants but at all times they are learning and coming to terms with a real perspective of what school life involves.
Children entering Kindergarten need to have developed certain social and emotional skills, to a level where they can cope with the demands of their day. Some of the most important skills include independence, responsibility, confidence, co-operation, organisation, sharing, turn- taking and listening to, remembering and following sets of directions. Children who are socially, emotionally, and physically ready for the challenges that Kindergarten presents, cope well with the new demands. The more of these social and emotional skills that young children have mastered before they enter Kindergarten, the better they are able to cope with the academic demands presented. The PreKinder program is designed to allow children to develop these social and emotional skills and confidently take them through to Kindergarten.
Throughout their PreKinder year the children will gradually become familiar with their new school environment and the procedures in the Kindergarten room. At the beginning of the year this may be as simple as popping in and saying hello to the Kindergarten children or taking a walk around the school and watching the school at work. By the end of the year the children will spend some time on their own in the Kindergarten room with the Kindergarten teacher getting a real sense of what it will be like in Kindergarten. This allows the children to be familiar with and know what to expect when they begin school. They will know their teacher, their friends, the classroom and school environment, where the toilets are, where the library is and many of the unknown elements that can cause anxiety on your first day of school have been eliminated. It is excitement rather than fear that will carry these children through on their first day of Kindergarten because they know what to expect.
